On November 12-13, 2024, the Institute of Science Tokyo hosted the TransBio Workshop under the AUN/SEED-Net REd-UC framework, gathering TransBio (Transregional Biofuels Collaboration for Sustainable Transportation) consortium members from Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Kenya, along with approximately 20 other participants both on-site and online. The workshop served as a dynamic platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring recent advancements in biofuel and renewable energy, particularly in the context of the transportation sector.

Prof. Dr. Mamoru Tanahashi, Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Institute, set the tone for the event with an inspiring welcome address that highlighted the crucial role of international collaboration in fostering sustainable development. This was followed by a comprehensive overview of the AUN/SEED-Net project and the REd-UC program, presented by an AUN/SEED-Net representative.

The workshop featured an engaging presentation by Prof. Dr. Apanee Luengnaruemitchai from Chulalongkorn University, who shared an in-depth update on the latest progress within the TransBio REd-UC Consortium. This was complemented by a stimulating panel discussion, which tackled pressing topics such as challenges in biofuel production across different countries, opportunities for student exchange, and future initiatives, including the potential for a 2025 joint paper submission and subsequent workshops.

The first day concluded with a seminar that showcased seven presentations by faculty members and students from participating institutions. These talks spurred lively discussions on biodiesel advancements and renewable energy technologies.

Day two offered participants valuable hands-on experiences. The TransBio consortium members visited cutting-edge research laboratories within the Faculty of Engineering at the Institute of Science Tokyo, delving into pioneering studies on biofuel, renewable energy, and engine combustion. The afternoon visit to the Asia Pacific Energy Research Center (APERC) enriched participants' understanding of green energy initiatives and highlighted the varying approaches to energy transition and sustainability across the region's national policies.

The TransBio Workshop 2024 was a testament to the transformative power of international collaboration and knowledge exchange, reinforcing shared commitments to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Stay tuned for future updates from the consortium!
