After a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) training course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment, Version 4.0 (Tier 1), was successfully held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, under the invitation and recommendation of the Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam (MoE). The training brought together a total of 30 participants from various educational sectors, namely the MoE, public and private higher education institutions (HEIs), and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The AUN-QA Tier 1 Training ran from 31 October – 3 November 2022, at Aman Hills Hotel, Jalan Muara, Bandar Seri Begawan. The four-day training course introduced participants to the AUN-QA model and provided opportunities for HEIs to raise the caliber of teaching and learning at the programme level by developing their academic professors, lecturers, and professionals. It enabled participants to conduct their own ‘Self Assessment’ and produce “Self Assessment reports," assisting them in utilizing the AUN-QA system.

Officiating the closing ceremony of the training were the guests of honour, Permanent Secretary at the MoE, Dr. Haji Azman bin Haji Ahmad, along with vice chancellors, rectors, presidents, and representatives from invited institutions. We received the honour from Dr. Haki Azman bin Ahmad, as he presented certificates to all 30 participants who successfully completed the AUN-QA Tier 1 Training.

The four quality assurance (QA) experts facilitaing the training were Prof. Ir. Dr. Shahrir Abdullah as the Lead Coach, Prof. Dr. Wyona C. Patalinghug, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evangaline P. Bautista, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamolwan Lueprasert. They provided an insightful overview of the QA ecosystem, the AUN-QA framework and its criteria, the plan-do-check-action approach to self-assessment at the programme level, and the process of AUN-QA programme assessment.

Participants were trained to recognize key components of the QA ecosystem as well as comprehend the AUN-QA framework, criteria, and requirements. The training also gave them the chance to analyze the study programme's compliance with the AUN-QA framework and enhance programme QA in order to address any incompliancy.

The AUN-QA Tier 1 Training was held with purposes of strengthening the development of Brunei’s university’s QA system and fostering a culture of excellence among administrators, academics, and university staff. The trainees will have a better understanding of the AUN-QA systems, mechanisms, and self-assessment report upon the completion of this Tier 1 Training course. With the use of this expertise, it would be beneficial and could help to uplift the higher education standards in Brunei and the ASEAN region.

On top of that, Brunei’s daily newspapers, namely, Borneo Bulletin, Media Permata and Pelita Brunei recorded the success of 30 participants who efficiently completed the AUN-QA Tier 1 Training. More detail can be read at:
