The 13th AUN-QA Institutional Assessment at Far Eastern University, A Community Focused Institution Placing its People First

By
Patitin Lertnaikiat
AUN Programme Officer;

Towards the end of November 2024, AUN-QA conducted its 13th Institutional Assessment at Far Eastern University (FEU) at the Manila campus in the Philippines. The core values of fortitude, excellence, and uprightness found in FEU is a standout highlight of their institution.

FEU is also well known for its community projects through their Community Extension Services (CES) initiatives that are research-based community extension programmes of the University. The vision of this programme aims to build self-sustaining partner communities through research-based approaches that align with UN’s sustainable development goals (SDG).

Throughout the assessment site visitations, FEU showcased to AUN-QA two of their community extension programmes. One was a community partnership with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology for female convicts where the university sends personnel to train participants valuable life and work skills to prepare them for a future after discharge. This initiative ensures that those with a criminal record will still have a chance to contribute to society as an upstanding citizen.

The second community extension programme that AUN-QA was able to explore was Project Mangyan, where FEU visited indigenous community partners to uplift their people by teaching modern knowledge and donating important supplies. The knowledge that is taught are often crafts and skills that ensures the indigenous communities can have reliable livelihoods and to raise awareness on health and psychological needs. Furthermore, this programme also preserves the culture of indigenous communities and allows FEU to document and disseminate its existence. The supplies that are donated are important resources and technology that are often far too expensive for the communities to afford such as modern medicine, computers, and educational supplies.

13th AUN-QA Institutional Assessment at Far Eastern University (FEU)

Date:

25 - 29 November, 2024

Country:

The Philippines

Ministry:

FEU is an autonomous institution.

University Overview:

FEU is proud of its campus which is “green,” literally and figuratively. The FEU Manila campus is 4.4 hectares in the heart of busy Manila. It has a huge central quadrangle and garden flanked by trees, hidden student quiet spots amidst bougainvillea, and ten art deco buildings, five of which are cited by UNESCO as collectively being an Asia Pacific Heritage Site. FEU is a proud “campus museum” with artworks by renowned and national artists found throughout the buildings and open spaces. As well as the five heritage buildings designed by national artist Pablo Antonio, there are sculptural works by Francisco Manansala at the central quadrangle, murals by Carlos “Botong” Francisco in the chapel, and iconic images of national heroes by Fernando Amorsolo. FEU also boasts of its auditorium which served as a major cultural center of the Philippines from the 1930s to the 1970s.

FEU is “green” as well in its facilities and campus planning. It is pioneering among universities in the Philippines in its commitment to solar power. It currently has one solar power plant in its sister campus in Rodriguez, Rizal, and is constructing two more, also in sister campuses of Marikina and Cavite. The FEU Manila campus also pioneered in the conversion of its air conditioning system to a chilled water district cooling. This is an energy-efficient system that uses 20-35% less electricity compared to traditional air-conditioning systems.
