RCEnvE2023: Truly a conference for a sustainable future!

AUN/SEED-Net Programme Lead;

The Regional Conference on Environmental Engineering 2023 (RCEnvE2023) took place at the Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on September 26 and 27, 2023. The conference was held in conjunction with the International Conference on Sustainable and Environmental Technology 2023 (ISET2023).

More than 100 participants from academia and industry in eight countries within and outside ASEAN-Japan attended the on-site event, which aimed to connect and sustain the research collaboration network. Under the theme of “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Future,” the conference provided an excellent platform to showcase environmental engineering innovations through plenary sessions, papers in parallel sessions, and presentations. The conference addressed various topics, including Water and Wastewater Treatment, Advanced Materials Processing and Technology, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and Membrane Technology.

The conference provided valuable technical content and information on the successful collaboration of AUN/SEED-Net with other initiatives. Participants were introduced to the current programs and activities offered during the Transitional Period, spanning from March 2023 to 2026. They were also invited to register for inclusion in the AUN/SEED-Net Alumni Directory. The conference included presentations on future collaborations with partners such as the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation Platform (JASTIP) and Leave a Nest. Additionally, immediately before the closing ceremony, the ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ) shared valuable information on the situation following the ownership transfer from AUN/SEED-Net to UTM in 2021.

Finally, we at AUN/SEED-Net would like to express our sincere appreciation to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mukhlis bin A. Rahman and the organizing committee at the AMTEC of UTM for their efforts in successfully organizing the conference. Your unwavering dedication, tireless efforts, and commitment have played a vital role in making this event a success. We are truly grateful for your invaluable contributions. We would also like to thank all the participants who took the time to attend the conference. Your involvement and contributions have helped ensure the continued sustainability of this network.

The 28th AUN/SEED-Net Steering Committee Meeting Has Shown Strong Interest for Continuation

AUN/SEED-Net is currently undergoing its Transitional Phase, where it has now been fully integrated with the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat. Throughout the 20 years of operation for AUN/SEED-Net, it has successfully supported various Scholarships, Research and Mobility Programs, Academic Conferences, Journal Publications, and University-Industry Linkages for 26 ASEAN Member Institutions (MI) and 18 Japanese Partner Universities (JPU) across 10 Engineering Fields. While in its transitional phase, there is a strong interest in continuing this operation among the stakeholders. This interest has been evident from the feedback received during the 28th AUN/SEED-Net Steering Committee Meeting held on 31 January 2024.

The 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting: How ASEAN Higher Education can Stay ahead of the Fast-Changing Curve

The world has entered an age when ‘knowledge’ is ‘expiring’ fast. With new disruptions coming up one after the other, the knowledge and skills students learn in class can quickly go obsolete. How can ASEAN higher education keep up with this? In the 2nd session of the 14th AUN Rectors’ Meeting “Meeting the expectations of the people,” top executives of AUN Member Universities discussed how ASEAN higher education can nurture the skills and virtues that will remain relevant to the upcoming generation and “future-proof” them, even in the volatile, fast-changing world.
