Welcome to the wrap up of AUN Activities in 2023! With the world having made a major recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2023, we saw strong return and continuation of several major AUN activities in the interactive onsite format!

The AUN Secretariat would like to use this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all of our AUN Core Member Universities, Associate Member Universities, academic professionals, youths, students and stakeholders for their active contribution and participation in the network’s activities throughout the year. We at the AUN Secretariat are excited to see this strong collaboration within our network of premier ASEAN universities continue in our shared mission to promote the quality and development of ASEAN higher education.

Virtual MoU Signing Ceremony between NEAS Australia and AUN

On 18 January 2023, Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, ASEAN University Network (AUN) Executive Director and Dr. Patrick Pheasant, Chief Executive Officer of NEAS Australia (National ELT Accreditation Scheme Ltd), signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance towards effective enhancement of the process and management of quality assurance in English language learning and to designate the direction to steer English language teaching communities forward.

ASEAN Universities Shared Health Promotion Progress and Success Stories at the 7th AUN-HPN International Advisory Committee Meeting

The AUN-HPN International Advisory Committee convened on 19th January 2023 in Thailand. This meeting showed outstanding progress and success stories of health promotion strategies employed by each member university at their institutions. Meanwhile, the Healthy University Rating System (HURS) is continuing strong, with more universities participating and some achieving the top rating of 5 stars for the first time! The co-host of the next AUN-HPN International Advisory Committee Meeting was unveiled at the end of this meeting as well.

3rd AUN International Health Promotion Conference raised awareness and highlighted actions towards Mental Health Issues and Well-being in ASEAN Universities

The 3rd AUN International Health Promotion Conference, with the topic "Mental Health and Well-being of ASEAN Universities during the Post-COVID-19 Period: Awareness and Actions," was successfully held on 20 January 2023 in Thailand. Many prestigious ASEAN universities shared their protocols and experiences on health promotion in their universities as well as the countermeasures for mental health issues in the post COVID-19 period.

Following the absolutely packed presentations, discussions, and exchange of knowledge from speakers at the 3rd AUN International Health Promotion Conference, came three Signing Ceremonies that will ensure the future of ASEAN University Network - Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN). Two MOUs were signed, one between ThaiHealth and AUN-HPN, and the second being the implementation of the HURS. The third signing ceremony was for the conference statement of AUN-HPN. All the signing will allow AUN-HPN to continue being the leading powerhouse for the health promotion movement in the ASEAN region.

The CALOHEA Project has taken a major leap towards its goal of enhancing mobility and internationalization in Universities in Asia with the first National Meeting on 2 - 3 March, 2023, at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia. This two-day event of knowledge sharing, open discussion, and a workshop is another step towards bringing Higher Education in SEA into a common space and enhancing mobility between SEA countries and even to other regions by implementing the 3 Core Recognition Mechanisms (RM3) into SEA Universities.

Which is why the AUN-QA has prepared a special two for one package for participants of the 12th Assessor Training Workshop for AUN-QA Programme Assessment, co-hosted by De La Salle University on 16 to 22 March, 2023. Along with the workshop also came the 244th AUN-QA Programme Assessment at DLSU where all participants had the opportunity to observe the process of an actual programme assessment!

The 3rd CALOHEA National Meeting took place on April 5-6, 2023, at the Laos-Japan Institute, Dong Dok Campus, National University of Laos, with over 180 participants from 12 institutions. The event discussed the future of higher education in Laos, including recognition mechanisms, internationalization, and curriculum development, and featured feedback on Authentic Assessment from subject area groups. The events also highlighted the importance of training and awareness-raising for educators to implement Authentic Assessment effectively.

What does it take to achieve academic mobility at a massive, international scale? No matter the answer, CALOHEA is determined to achieve the goal of developing a large-scale student exchange and academic mobility in Asia. The National Meetings will bring together experts, university staff, and even students to enlighten each other with good practices, sharing experiences, and understand the 3 Recognition Mechanisms that will pave the way towards the ultimate qualifications framework for each nation that will take student and academic mobility in Asia to the next level. With sufficient time passing since NMs have begun earlier this year, the 8th CALOHEA NM from the 10th and 11th of August at Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) has shown the successful outputs of CALOHEA becoming more apparent with UNHAS demonstrating curriculum improvements with a dedicated focus on student workload calculation.

A return after two-year hiatus and one online instalment; this year, the students took their journey through time and decoded the origin of contemporary Thai society in this flagship youth activity.

AUN-QA International Conference Made its Grand Return at Bangkok, Back and Bigger than Ever

The AUN-QA International Conference was last conducted in 2019, before the pandemic hit. Forward to now, 4 years later, it is back and bigger than ever at Bangkok, boasting over 400 participants and a truly international cast of speakers to enrich the dialogue at the conference on 6 - 7 September 2023! The International Conference was followed by two internal meetings, Assessors’ General Assembly and Chief Quality Officers’ Meeting, has shown that AUN-QA is back in full swing after the pandemic has died down. And they are fully prepared to continue growing internationally!

The CALOHEA Project continued its endeavour to reshape higher education in Cambodia through the 11th CALOHEA National Meeting. The two-day hybrid event held from 9-10 October 2023 at Svay Rieng University saw the gathering of Cambodia’s leaders, including H.E Prof. TUM Saravuth, Rector of Svay Rieng University, H.E MAK Ngoy, Director General of Department of Higher Education, and H.E Dr. SOM Ratana, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, who provided an enlightening opening speech. This initiative promises to chart a new course for learning outcomes in Cambodian and ASEAN higher education.

Following the success of the Internal Quality Assurance System Design and Development Workshop in March 2023, Viet Nam, the AUN-QA IQA Redesign Taskforce was established and recently conducted its first meeting on 20 - 21 October 2023 in Bangkok. Through the intensive discussion on existing Viet Nam and Cambodia IQA frameworks and the root-cause analysis of the workshop in Viet Nam, the outcome of this meeting will pave the way for the future of ASEAN IQA and the task force will be at the forefront!

In a dedicated effort to ramp up ASEAN higher education for internationalisation, over 250 participants joined forces with the CALOHEA’s experts in the 13th CALOHEA National Meeting held from 31 October - 1 November 2023 at Souphanouvong University, Lao PDR. The CALOHEA National Meeting and its workshop served as a platform for immersive, hands-on experiences in implementing the CALOHEA’s Recognition Mechanisms, a quality framework and management that would ensure global recognition of ASEAN students’ hard work and learning outcomes.

The CALOHEA National Meeting wrapped up its final series at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on 15-16 November 2023. The spotlight of the event was on Authentic Assessment—an assessment method that tests students' skills and knowledge through practical, real-world experiences, preparing them for success with measures that are relevant to their professional growth. This finale marked not the ending but a transition to the new phase of implementation. With the interest of over 3,000 participants from 250+ universities in 15 Countries throughout its run, the CALOHEA National Meeting has accomplished its goal in paving the way with endless possibilities for the CALOHEA project and its Consortium to pursue academic and learning excellence, mobility, internationalisation, and qualifications transformation with the community at large.

Since its establishment in 2014, ASEAN University Network Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN) has been actively contributing to university health promotion across the ASEAN region. In this connection, the book "Management and Strategy: How AUN-HPN Became a Driving Force for Regional Health Promotion" has been published by the AUN Secretariat team in coordination with AUN-HPN to observe and catalogue the good practices in managing the thematic network of universities. To do so, this book focuses on the work and perspectives of AUN-HPN’s past and current thought leaders as well as the observation of AUN-HPN flagship activities.

This is why on 21 November 2023, Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, Executive Director of the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat, together with Dr. Gregorio Z. Gamboa, Jr., Chair/President of the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) Board of Trustees entered official partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This established an official collaborative framework between AUN and AACCUP geared to drive forward Quality Assurance (QA) excellence in Higher Education Institutions (HEI) across the ASEAN region via dialogue engagement, sharing of non-confidential information, as well as undertaking joint projects.

Following the pandemic, the world has also seen the rise of mental health issues caused by the limited social interaction due to prolonged isolation. At the ASEAN University Network Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN) 8th International Advisory Committee (IAC) meeting, the network’s member universities gather once again to address these pressing health issues in society and share their best practices in health promotion missions.

The ASEAN-Japan Youth Forum: Take Actions for Social Change (TASC) 2023 came to a conclusion on 25 November 2023 in Tokyo. Co-organised by Kamenori Foundation,  Japan Foundation and ASEAN University Network, TASC 2023 was aimed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relationship and provide an international platform for the upcoming generations of young leaders from ASEAN and Japan to network and work together for the prospect of building a better future. Over the span of 5 months in 3 ASEAN countries and Japan, the forum saw the participation of 30 youths from 9 ASEAN countries and Japan.

AUN-HPN Shared Good Health Promotion Practices at the Global Health Congress in Japan

On 25 November 2023, the ASEAN University Network Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN) had the opportunity to share their good practices and the Healthy University Rating System (HURS) at the Global Health Congress in Japan. During the event’s symposium, universities that achieved 5 or 4 star ratings in HURS were also invited to share their good practices in health promotion to interested health practitioners, experts, and university staff from Japan who were present at the symposium.

The CALOHEA 7th General Meeting: Advancing Higher Education Alignment in Southeast Asia

In an exciting update from the 7th General Meeting held in Porto, Portugal, the project consortium has made significant strides after three years of collaboration. While the key recognition mechanisms frameworks are still in the process of finalization, it's noteworthy that certain frameworks have already been successfully implemented by many of the project participants and cascaded to others outside the project  for more to be implemented as well. This achievement marks a crucial step towards extending the project's impact into the future.
