Announcing New Webinar: “Enhancing ELT Standards with NEAS Quality Assurance,” - Join AUN and NEAS Now in Overcoming Key Challenges in Delivering English Language Teaching

By
Ninnart Ratanasukhon
AUN Programme Officer;

On 10 September and 8 October 2024, AUN, in collaboration with NEAS Australia, proudly presents a new webinar to introduce how ASEAN universities can leverage NEAS’ quality assurance for English language teaching (ELT) to address challenges in ELT departments and centres. ASEAN Universities looking to enhance their ELT departments with structural quality assurance are highly encouraged to join, with the webinar led by NEAS Education Manager and designed based on surveys from 60 ASEAN universities.

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) is committed to spearhead impactful programmes for enhancing institutional capabilities and fostering internationalisation efforts among ASEAN universities. These initiatives span a broad spectrum, including Cross-border Research/Academic Collaboration, Student Mobility, Qualifications Transformation, University IT Capabilities, University English Language Capabilities Building, Internal Quality Assurance, and Institutional-Level Quality Enhancement.

Recognised as a key driver and enabler in the development and enhancement of human resources within ASEAN higher education, AUN is dedicated to advancing English language capabilities across the region.

AUN signed an MOU with NEAS on 18 January 2023 to advance towards effective enhancement of the process as well as the management of quality assurance of ELT. NEAS is acknowledged as the global leader for the ELT community following 30 years of quality-assuring ELT provision across higher education, vocational education and training, high school, and independent ELICOS providers.

This webinar is designed based on the survey conducted by NEAS to explore the challenges and needs of ASEAN universities when it comes to ELT. The survey included 68 respondents from 60 ASEAN universities across 10 countries.

The results revealed that some of the major challenges faced by ELT departments of ASEAN universities include:

  • Student language proficiency (75%)
  • Faculty qualifications (33.8%)
  • Language support services (41.2%)

60.3% of respondents stressed the importance of ELT centres, and 11.7% also cited lack of structured quality assurance mechanisms as posing challenges to their ELT departments.

To these challenges, NEAS with structured course evaluations and faculty reviews, international standards and curriculum alignment, staff professional development and training programmes, and a culture of continuous improvement can provide ASEAN universities with the right assistance.

Ms. Rima Ibrahim, Education Manager at NEAS, will demonstrate in the upcoming webinar how NEAS structural quality assurance can enhance ELT quality and help ASEAN universities overcome challenges and deliver high-quality English language education.

The webinar will be held twice on 10 September 2024 and 8 October 2024 from 10 A.M. (GMT+7). Both rounds of the webinar share the same content, and interested participants can select the date they find most suitable for their schedule. There is no charge for participating in the webinar.
