Background:

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat, during the 1st AUN Student Affairs Meeting (AUN SAM) 2015 held at Chulalongkorn University recently, had deliberated and jointly agreed on the formation of new operational structure and functions for the association. Consequently, this agreement necessitates the development of a new and more efficient networking system, based on the Thematic Network structure that enables associated members to collaborate and monitor all activities planned via socially-enabled web environments.

The AUN Secretariat supported the decision to establish AUN Student Affairs Network (AUN-SAN) as the main network and channel that will facilitate better integrations between AUN Member Universities in student affairs and activities and that Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has been given the mandate to host AUN-SAN network.

AUN-SAN will be a platform to empower, develop student leadership, as well as enhance related student affairs and governance through Student Affairs body of AUN Member Universities. The annual AUN-SAN Meeting will be held in parallel with ASEAN Student Leaders Forum (ASLF) and the key annual activity under AUN-SAN is ASEAN Experiential Learning Programme (AELP).

AELP is a one week program that serves as a real learning exposure and immersion for university students in ASEAN with focus on sociocultural theme. The key activities include field trip, group discussion, and reflection activity.

Hence, AUN-SAN has been officially established in 2016 as endorsed at the 32nd AUN Board of Trustees Meeting 2016 in Phuket, Thailand.

Recent Development:

The 1st AUN-SAN Meeting was organized in 2016 held in parallel with the 5th ASEAN Student Leaders Forum in the Philippines at De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, and University of the Philippines Diliman. The Meeting mainly featured discussions on potential activities for student leadership development and it was greed that ASEAN Experiential Learning Programme (AELP) will be an annual flagship activity under AUN-SAN.
